Late Sunday, WikiLeaks dot org, a whistleblowers’ website, published tens of thousands of classified US military documents detailing the war in Afghanistan. The records provide an account of the war from January 2004 through the end of 2009, before President Obama established his strategy for the war in Afghanistan. According to the New York Times, who had access to the documents for several weeks along with the Guardian and German newspaper Der Spiegel, the documents confirm US fears of a double play, that Pakistani intelligence is helping the Taliban in Afghanistan coordinate attacks against US troops while Pakistan receives more than a billion dollars from the US to fight terrorism. Other highlights the NY Times reported were that there were previously unreported Afghan civilian deaths in NATO military operations and that the Taliban had acquired surface-to-air missiles. The White House’s National Security Adviser General James Jones condemned the disclosure of classified information, stating that it could threaten our nation’s security. He said quote "These irresponsible leaks will not impact our ongoing commitment to deepen our partnerships with Afghanistan and Pakistan; to defeat our common enemies; and to support the aspirations of the Afghan and Pakistani people."
